Today I finished getting everything in the garden! YAY!! I haven't had a garden in ummmmm.....30+ years, since I was in high school.
I am so excited! Cannot wait for the next few months to pass and see what all goodies I harvest!
The garden is located where the old house was sitting. In the photo above, you can see the entire thing. The old house was 960 sf. The garden takes up the entire space, with the exception of where I am creating a sidewalk with concrete stepping stones.
I planted things close together (I will probably curse this later in the summer), following the concept of "The Holy Trinity" of Corn/Beans/Squash. It is also called "The Three Sisters". Here's a link with info on this. This is something I found out about on Facebook. I also used this method to help with watering issues. We are in a drought here, and keeping things planted close together helps keep them as wet as possible, as well as keeping it compact helps with ease of watering.
I planted the following. Rows starting at the far left side of photo.
Zucchini
Bodacious Corn
Kentucky Wonder Green Beans
Yellow Crookneck Squash

Banana Peppers/Bell Peppers/Okra
Kandy Corn
Red Beans/Black Eye Peas
second row same as above
Pickling Cucumbers/Jalapeno Peppers/Cantaloupe
Pickling Cucumbers/Purple Hull Peas (Cowpeas)
------->>>narrow walkway here
Peaches & Cream Corn/Tomatoes
second row same as above
Pinto Beans/Black Beans
Lima Beans/Rhubarb

Japanese Popcorn/Bountiful Bush Green Beans
second row same as above
1 hill Watermelon
3 hills Pie Pumpkin
There is a small area on the opposite side of the sidewalk, Glass Gem Corn is located there.
Once harvest is over with the 60-75 day crops, I will plant Turnips, Mustard greens, Collard greens, beets and carrots. I may even attempt lettuce, but we probably wouldn't eat it as fast as it would be ready to harvest....We will see.
You have a lot planted! I wanted some glass gem corn and never got any. Good luck with it. Not sure how much colder it gets there than here but we had some 15 degree nights during the winter and it never bothered my beets, lettuce, kale, carrots or chard. I had those things all winter.
ReplyDeleteWow! That is a lot of planting. I hope you gets lots of "fruits" for all of your labor. I have tried a garden at this place 3 times now. This is the only time it has really done anything. I think it is my soil. This time I only did small boxes just to see what would grow in there and I controlled the soil. I only planted watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumber, radishes, and tomatoes. So far I have eaten the radishes. I have tomatoes that look like they may be ready in a couple of weeks, cucumbers that are a couple of days away from being picked and pea-sized watermelons. I haven't seen anything on the cantaloupe yet, but the plants look great. It is very small this year because I wanted to test and see if it was me or the ground being the reason I wasn't seeing results...lol. Plus, Steven doesn't do veggies very well. So, I really only do the things I like that can be picked right from the vine and eaten raw :) Hope your garden thrives!
ReplyDeleteOh hmmm...it's using my username instead of my name...Sandy Allen.
DeleteGood job! I can't tell if you've fenced in the area or not? You might consider rabbit fencing, etc. if you haven't. Nancy @ Little Homestead In Boise
ReplyDeleteNancy, I don't have the garden fenced, but our entire 1.18 acres is completely fenced. Haven't seen any rabbits inside the fence in 2 years.
